T Cells
T cells are the main effector cells of the adaptive immune system, characterized by the presence of a T cell receptor (TCR) on their cell surface. T cells recognize foreign antigens in the context of major histocompatibility complex molecules on antigen-presenting cells. There are three main types of T cells: cytotoxic, helper, and regulatory. These lymphocytes are the focus of many research and translational medicine programs in immunology (i.e., checkpoint inhibition), infectious diseases, cell and gene therapy, regenerative medicine, and more.
